200 UP FOR TREVITHICK- AND POLTAIR HOMES
|
A landmark event in the history of transport,
involving one of Cornwall’s greatest sons, is to be honoured afresh as a Cornish
property developer celebrates a special milestone of its own.
Truro-based Poltair Homes has now recorded the completion and sale of its 200th
home – in the same year as the 200th anniversary of Richard Trevithick’s first
steam engine to run on rails.
The Bank of England has minted a commemorative £2 coin to mark the Trevithick
anniversary and Poltair Homes has acquired 200 of them. |
Now the company will give one of the coins, within a special presentation pack,
to all purchasers or current occupiers at their 12 developed or developing sites
across Cornwall. The packs will also be given to Poltair Homes associates,
professional advisors and suppliers.
“We are very proud of the greatest son of Cornwall and we are also very proud of
our own achievements as a truly local business employing local people, and so we
thought it would be appropriate to celebrate by linking the two 200s,” said
director Paul Stephens.

Richard Trevithick pioneered the use of high
pressure steam, revolutionised mining practices and invented the first road
locomotive, forerunner of the modern motor car.
In February 1804, he produced the world's first steam engine to run successfully
on rails. The locomotive, with its single vertical cylinder, 8ft flywheel and
long piston-rod, managed to haul ten tons of iron, 70 passengers and five wagons
from the ironworks at Penydarren to the Merthyr-Cardiff Canal. |
Poltair Homes began life in 1996 with a
supposedly “one-off” development of 25 properties at Wadebridge. Encouraged by
its success here, the company has since completed projects at The Lizard,
Newquay, Zelah, Mount Hawke and another one at Wadebridge.
It is currently developing sites at Trewoon – where the 200th completion and
sale has been achieved – and Camelford, Cubert, St Buryan, Penryn, Luxulyan and
High Bickington. |
